This is more than a bridge: it is a landmark for the North East. Its unique and elegant design has attracted visitors from around the world. Known as the 'blinking eye', the bridge provides a footpath and cycle-way linking new arts and cultural developments at Gateshead Quays on the south bank with Newcastle Quayside.
The judges said:
"This bridge has already become an architectural and engineering icon for Gateshead and Newcastle as a result of its unique movement pattern - based on the blinking of an eye. The bridge is a wonderful example of the public impact good design can have."
