About the project

The Grade II-listed Victoria Footbridge, a three-span suspension bridge, 56 metres long has been meticulously restored to its former glory. It is a key pedestrian and cycle route into the city of Hereford across the River Wye and its repair has encouraged other city improvements.

During May to September 2006, the structural steelwork was strengthened; the footway was replaced with timber to match the original; rust was removed; it was repainted in the original cream colour; and decorative features were sensitively restored.

The short closure time, limited access and environmental restrictions called for innovative solutions. A working platform on a pontoon avoided construction, noise and vibration below water level, minimising disturbance to river life, and the need for heavy machinery was eliminated.

The public was kept fully informed and their comments taken into account in developing the scheme. The project was completed within 0.6 per cent of the target budget and the bridge re-opened three weeks earlier than scheduled.

The judges said: 'Successful collaboration has provided new sustainability and prolonged the life of the footbridge'.
