About the project

Cleveleys coast protection scheme started with a dilapidated 1920s seafront and is transforming it into a vibrant 21st century seafront.

The new sinuous, wave-like waterfront has achieved several objectives. First and foremost, it has safeguarded Cleveleys from tidal flooding. But the second and third phases of the project have also provided an improved promenade for people to enjoy strolling along, stimulated tourism and supported local retailers, and encouraged inward investment. It has also, importantly, established a clear sense of identity for the town: local people were closely involved in consultation.

Wyre Borough Council wanted the new concrete frontage to use high-quality, sustainable materials to provide intrigue, education and entice the visitor along the length of the redeveloped promenade.

The scheme was completed 72 weeks ahead of schedule by pre-casting the high-risk elements and phasing work through the winter and summer. It also achieved savings of over £1 million, partially through economies of scale with other council projects.

Perhaps the biggest indicator of success is the 100 per cent satisfaction rating from the council. Local people have been hugely enthusiastic. ‘It’s like a work of art on your very own doorstep’ one person said, and ‘such a huge improvement – it makes me proud to live on the Fylde Coast’.

Judges' comment
